Who We Are

History Book Tales (historybooktales.com) is an independent history publication based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We are published by Auburn AI, a sole proprietorship operated by Alexander McGregor.

Our Mission

We publish narrative history that takes both popular fascination and scholarly rigor seriously. Our contributors cover the ancient Mediterranean and Near East, medieval Europe, the early modern period, the history of ideas, and the cross-cultural networks that linked the premodern world. We aim to write history that is accessible without being shallow, and rigorous without being dry.

Editorial Standards

Every article published on History Book Tales follows the same editorial standards:

  • Sourcing. Claims of historical fact are grounded in primary sources, peer-reviewed scholarship, and reputable secondary works. Where historians disagree, we say so.
  • Attribution. Direct quotations are attributed. When a claim represents one historian’s interpretation rather than settled consensus, we identify it as such.
  • Corrections. When we get something wrong, we correct it openly and note the change at the top of the article.
  • Sensitive topics. Articles dealing with violence, religion, colonialism, and contested national histories are written to inform rather than provoke, and reviewed for tone and accuracy before publication.
  • No paid placements. We do not accept payment in exchange for editorial coverage. Affiliate links (where present) are disclosed; see our Affiliate Disclosure.

AI Disclosure

History Book Tales is an AI-assisted publication. Most articles on this site are drafted by Claude (a large language model developed by Anthropic) under the editorial direction of our human team. Drafts are then fact-checked, edited, and approved by a human editor before publication.

This workflow lets a small team produce more historical coverage than would otherwise be possible. It does not exempt us from accuracy obligations: every fact, name, date, and quotation is reviewed by a human before publication, and we take responsibility for any errors that slip through.

We use AI as a research and drafting assistant, not as an oracle. We do not publish AI-generated content that has not been reviewed and edited by a human.

Some illustrative images used on this site are generated by AI image models. Photographs, museum images, and archival reproductions are sourced from public-domain or licensed collections and credited where required.

Authorship and Bylines

Articles on History Book Tales appear under the byline of one of our contributors. Contributors are working writers (some using pen names) who specialize in particular eras or themes. Their work is edited by the History Book Tales team and the bylined contributor is responsible for the article’s framing and interpretation; the publisher (Auburn AI) is responsible for the editorial standards under which it is published.

You can read more about our contributors on their author pages, linked from each article.

Corrections and Feedback

If you spot a factual error or have feedback on an article, please contact us through our contact page. Material corrections are noted at the top of the corrected article with a brief description of what changed and when.

Independence

History Book Tales is independently owned and operated. We do not represent any university, museum, government agency, or political organization, and our editorial decisions are made by our own team without external influence.
